My Last Mile, Song and Lyrics by Billy McCune

My Last Mile, by Billy McCune
Recorded in 1968 by Danny Lyon

Lyrics

My Last Mile

I often wondered when I was a boy,
Why I was smart and killed all of my joy.
The road I have taken is all full of sin
Now I must pay and die in the end.

The jury found me guilty. They say I must pay.
But I have repented for both they and I.
I have asked for forgiveness. I prayed and I cried.
I want the Lord with me as I walk my last mile.

To you who have troubles, you should have none.
For in the bible God gave up his son
So we could be clean, and our lives worthwhile,
I want the Lord with me as I walk my last mile.

When ,they put those straps on me, I know I must go.
They can kill my body, but can not kill my soul,
When they put that current to me, I know I can't smile,
But I want the Lord with me as I walk my last mile.

Now to my mother, I know its not fair,
To give her son, to die in the chair.
But dear mother, keep your chin high
For I want the Lord with me as I walk my last mile.
