Nathan Smith
(1935-2002)

Nathan Smith -- manager of the Sunshine Hotel and close friend and patriarch of the Sound Portraits family -- died of cancer on May 26, 2002. He was sixty-six.

Musician, historian, cab driver, scientist, raconteur, and manager of the Sunshine Hotel, Nathan was a brilliant flame of kindness and irrepressible wit who lit up the Bowery for nearly two decades. He was a world-class eccentric -- charming, kooky, and kind. Nathan saved the lives of many men at the Sunshine Hotel and brightened the lives of countless others. He was the patron saint to the down-and-out of the down-and-out.

Our sympathies go out to Nathan’s children, Brenda and Marcus, and to everyone who had the privilege of being in his presence.

A glorious, bright, eccentric light is out. It's a dark day in New York City.

Watch over us buddy. Gezuxtahoiden.
